MANA’s first annual conference, “The State of the Blackamerican Muslim Community:

Beloved Believers, As-salamu alaikum,

I am happy to announce to you MANA’s first annual conference, “The State of the Blackamerican Muslim Community: Assessment and Analysis for an Achievable Agenda,” to be held November 2-4, 2007 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in downtown Philadelphia.

This conference proposes to explore the state of the Blackamerican Muslim community by (1) assessing and analyzing the issues, (2) discussing possible solutions, and (3) formulating preliminary plans for implementation.  This conference is a working conference in which speakers and attendees will put their heads together to look at issues and seek solutions.  We want to go beyond talk.  We are striving to build an agenda for MANA from the ground up, by seeking your input and participation.  I want attendees to leave the conference knowing that some progress has been achieved in improving the Muslim community.  I also hope that attendees will be energized to join MANA’s efforts to develop programmatic solutions.  The State of the Blackamerican Conference will focus on these issues in workshops and main sessions: marriage/family, criminal justice, education, youth, young adults, women, health, economic development and the masjid.

There will be three main sessions, one banquet, four workshop sessions and one wrap-up session with reports and feedback.  During each workshop session there will be five parallel workshops.  There will a small exhibit area and baby sitting.

Deen Mohammed in order to determine the beginning of the major observances of the Muslim community such as Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.  This year Ramadan will come in the month of September and end in the month of October 2008; in the Islamic calendar 1429 A.H.  It is our intent that we will have an opportunity to get with the many committee members who have  volunteered their help in sighting the moon for the beginning of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr at this year’s annual convention.

Earlier this year we had the opportunity to sit down with our leader Imam Mohammed and ask him about the methods that should be used for determining when we begin our fast and determining the Eids.  The Imam replied,

Often we hear, “What will I do if I lose my job?” “What will I do if my husband leaves me?” The possibility of the unknown, leading to sudden or expected change, sometimes causes depression and despair. This leads to an unhealthy spirit. Sometimes the solution is simply surrendering to the will of the Creator.
